SOME REFLECTIONS ON THE NATIONAL DAY OF ROMANIA

Romania is in a glorious moment of history, at a time when his hopes reborn in another symbolic December, the one from 1989, begin to come true. On 104 years since the historical act of the Romanians, the 1 December 1918, the truth emerges clearly, that for Romania, as for other countries, the fruition of national ideologies and values is an organic component of European solidarity and its institutional improvement.

The geopolitical implications of the Baltic and Pontic space, where great empires from the west and east clashed over the centuries, they created the premises of a relatively common destiny for Romania and Poland. Relations between the two countries have had their ups and downs, but they acquired a new dynamic after the accession of both countries to the Euro-Atlantic structures. On 7 October 2009, during the visit of President Lech Kaczyński to Bucharest, the Declaration on the Polish-Romanian Strategic Partnership was signed, by which both parties committed to actively support the enlargement process of the European Union, to promote the vision of a strong North Atlantic Alliance and to make efforts to ensure energy security.

"The alliance of hearts with the founder of modern Poland - Jozef Pilsudski – is represented, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, of one people with two flags". These big words can be found in all the actions undertaken by the two countries. Mutual solidarity manifests itself even more strong, after both countries experienced the terrible communist regime.

At the moment, Polish-Romanian relations are based on three main pillars: cooperation within the European Union, security cooperation within NATO, as well as the partnership with the United States.

Warsaw and Bucharest unanimously support an equal European partnership, in the spirit of "one-speed Europe". In terms of security, the location of Poland and Romania on NATO's eastern flank means that both countries perceive regional and global challenges and threats similarly.

Today, when we celebrate the National Day of Romania together, the feeling that must animate us is that of responsibility towards the historical destiny of the Romanian people, who founded their destinies on these blessed lands, where history has placed other ethnicities alongside. Creating the future is done together, in the spirit of understanding, of tolerance and friendship,  building a mature democracy and sustainable prosperity, in the inevitable perspective of becoming European.

On the occasion of Romania's National Day, I wish the Romanian people the warmest congratulations and best wishes for health, wellness, prosperity and success! Wonderful winter holidays!, Romania! Janusz SZALINSKI

11 NOVEMBER – NATIONAL HOLIDAY – the message of Mr. Consul Janusz Szalinski

After 123 of uninterrupted years in which the Polish territories were under various foreign occupations, (Austria-Hungary, Prussia, Russia), 11 November 1918 brought not only the end of the first world war but also the reappearance of Poland on the map of Europe. Poland's Independence Day is known as Narodowe Święto Niepodległości (The national holiday of Independence) sau… pe scurt Independence Day (Independence day) and is closely related to Brigadier General Józef Piłsudski, founder of the Polish Legion. Still at 11 November two candles were lit – one in the Temple of Divine Providence, and the other – on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. These candles symbolize where the regaining of independence came from.

The historic candle, offered to the Polish bishops by the Holy Father in 1867, when Poland was not on the map, with the desire to burn in free Poland, it means the strength of our tradition, based on the Christian faith and the strength of the Plonese culture anchored in traditions, carried over generations, passed on to children and grandchildren.

Even if it happened gradually, we owe the process of regaining freedom to ourselves. Not only a coincidence of events and historical circumstances, of a miracle or care of providence, but our courage, our tenacity and deep faith made Poland back on the Map of Europe and declare our independence.

The peace and well-being we are experiencing now is primarily due to human sacrifices, of an unknown soldier, whose body has never been identified or found and which must be preserved in individual and collective memory.

Patriotism is not just a vision of how Poland should be in the future, about its development, about historical memory, but it is a strong feeling of each individual directed to the honor of the sacrificed heroes, let our thoughts and hearts be guided towards our soldiers who, then as now, guard the security of our homeland. The traditions, faith, our culture was built even when the Poles were punished, imprisoned or killed for it.  Nothing destroyed us. We were not destroyed by wars, partitions did not destroy us, we were not destroyed by the times when Poland was not on the map.

We must always defend the motherland. Not with a gun in hand, but we must guard its borders, especially now , in the situation given by the war in Ukraine, guarding the security of Poland and the security of Europe respectively. Let's fulfill our commitments by showing that we are a serious nation that understands what freedom means, but he also understands what it means to be strong.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY POLAND!

Scholarship for humanists

The Institut De Republica launches the second edition of the scholarship program for young humanists. Financial support, a series of semester meetings and a summer school trip await participants. Submit your project – only until 20 November!

The Joseph Conrad Fellowship is a comprehensive scholarship program. It includes several elements:

-implementation by the participants of their own scientific and artistic projects;
monthly financial support in the amount of 1.200 gross PLN;
-a series of lectures and seminars with the participation of the most important Polish and foreign representatives of the world, culture and science

-summer school, in which participants will work on their projects in groups, on the workshop,led by tutors;
-the revised publication of the text prepared within the Program in the scientific publishing house of the Institut De Republica.

We invite all students and authors (to 35 years) interested in the humanities broadly understood. The main theme of the academic year 2022/2023 will be: THE 19TH CENTURY AND THE MODERN POLISH FORM.

In addition to regular financial support, participants will have the opportunity to attend closed lectures and seminars, during which they will learn about and then critique the ideas and phenomena that shape the paradigm shifts of the Polish form.

During the two semesters, the following thematic areas will be explored:

THE BODY OF DISMOZED POLAND. About the abyss of divisions and the ways that Polish culture used to get out of it. We will seek answers to the following questions: Constitution of 3 may have opened one such path? The national riots were an expression of abysmal awareness? Romantic literature was self-discovery? And what does that mean?: Demolished Poland? We have a vague idea of what the Polish spirit is – but what is the polish body? How to communicate with it, how it is controlled and protected?

CITY AND RURAL GHOSTS. About two heroes of the 19th century: the city and the village, or rather – the images we created of them. The city as a space of history – a landscape of onrushing technology, a scene of social life, an architectural model of modernity. In turn, rural environment, rediscovered by popular history, it is a space where the real and the fantastic mix more than ever. What the Polish village really is, who lives it and who tells about it?

THE POLISH SOUL LABORATORY. How the new Polish form was invented. How they became Paris, Rome and other European cities were laboratories where émigré artists experimented with the Polish soul? Why did they want to escape and what to save? What a future they dreamed of? What was modernity in such a perspective: trauma or therapy?

Specters and ghosts of modernity. So about what modernity has replaced. What elements did modernization fail to control?, what areas of human experience he failed to name and say? We will go in search of ghosts and ghosts that have been hidden by the project of modernity, about which he was silent, and when he discovered them – reacted to them with fear or violence.

In the new year, we return to the era in which Joseph Conrad was born and lived. This remarkable writer is for us, above all, one of the first witnesses and chroniclers of the modern world. Furthermore – We see Conrad as the inventor of a language capable of describing this new world. The task of the Joseph Conrad Fellowship is to follow the same path – to learn new languages, narratives and categories of description, to test them and thus better understand the reality around us.

We encourage all interested parties to readREGULATIONS scholarship program, and those who decide to participate, to complete and send APPLICATION FORM
